Something that has been unique to Greetings Galore for the past 4 years are my custom designs, which have always been offered at no additional cost. Custom designs make up at least half of all orders placed and I really enjoy creating them.
Unfortunately, they take about 3 times a long to create as the other designs and the demand for them has now risen to a point where I can no longer keep up.
I recently became employed part-time as a local graphic designer. I hadn't planned to ever work outside my home, but I was offered a really fun job with good pay and couldn't resist. In addition, my husband is now deployed overseas again and I'm left to run my household singlehandedly for most of the next year. Because of these factors I have highly considered closing down Greetings Galore for good so that I can better devote my time to my new job and my children, however, I love my customers too much to do this.
So the compromise I've made is to cut down on the number of custom design orders I receive. First, by increasing the price to $45.00 to compensate for the additional time these designs take to create. Second, by no longer offering them to first-time customers.
I hate to exclude my new customers, but with my current "proof before payment" system I have been getting ripped off a LOT. People will place orders just for the heck of it, and I'll spend an entire evening creating their design only to never hear from them again. It is very disheartening to waste all of those hours that I could be spending with my children without being compensated in any way. Another way I'll be cutting down on "rip-offs" is by offering custom designs as digital downloads ONLY (to prevent someone from placing a custom order, and then only ordering 1 print - which HAS happened and compensates me enough to buy a Coke!).
I have found that my repeat customers are very trustworthy and always pay fairly for the work I do, so that is why I am going to continue to offer custom work to them alone. But all it takes to become a repeat customer is to order once. :)
Thank you for understanding and let me know if you have any questions.
